Dentist Near Glendale Is Successfully Using Cerec Technology for Same Day Dental Crowns
May 20, 2023
A dental crown is an artificial tooth that covers, or “caps” the visible portion of a tooth that may be decayed, damaged, unattractive, or weakened by an overly large filling. Dental crowns may also be used to secure a dental restoration, such as a dental bridge, protect a damaged tooth, or to top off a dental implant.
Crowns may be made of many types of materials, including metals or base-metal alloys such as gold, nickel, or chromium; porcelain-metal; zirconia; ceramic; or porcelain.
At Biltmore Dental Center, Dr. Sameet Koppikar is a board-certified Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) who has been acknowledged by other doctors as well as our patients for his advanced skills and attentive nature. Dr. Koppikar prefers to use porcelain crowns because they offer several benefits, including:
- The material has the same light-reflecting and temperature reacting characteristics as natural enamel
- Porcelain crowns are highly durable, sturdy, and stain resistant
- They can be custom-designed and milled in our state-of-the-art office in just one visit, using CEREC technology
With CEREC, an acronym for CERamic Reconstruction, Dr. Koppikar is able to design the crown with the patient and choose the appropriate shade of porcelain for optimal esthetic appeal. Then, instead of the traditional method of using paste and waiting until it hardens to create an impression to be sent to an offsite laboratory, Dr. Koppikar can capture a precise digital impression using a comfortable intraoral camera. From this advanced technology, a 3-dimensional model is made, allowing Dr. Koppikar and the patient to make adjustments and approve it together.
This computer-aided design and manufacturing provides greater accuracy and enhanced visual preparation for the patient. Once approved, the image is sent to the custom milling equipment and a crown is produced within 15 – 20 minutes. So rather than dealing with messy paste impressions and then waiting several weeks for a return visit, a patient can have his or her beautiful porcelain crown in one visit, without the need for a temporary crown.
