How Esthetic Veneers Are Transforming Phoenix, AZ Smiles

May 20, 2023

The word “esthetic” means related to beauty or pleasing in appearance. Isn’t that how you’d like your smile to be described, as beautiful or pleasing? Unfortunately, nature doesn’t grant flawless teeth to all of us. A busy lifestyle also takes its toll on the appearance of a smile. Dr. Sameet Koppikar of Biltmore Dental Center in Phoenix, AZ transforms less than perfect smiles with dental veneers.

A Bit About Veneer Technology

Veneers were originally designed by Dr. Charles Pincus to temporarily alter the smiles of movie actors in the 1920s and 1930s. After experimenting with bonding agents, he was able to keep the veneers in place a bit longer. It took until the early 1980s, though, to refine tooth preparation methods that allow veneers to be “permanently” cemented in place.

Those early Hollywood smiles looked too white, blocky, and artificial. Today’s veneers have come a long way. They are made from translucent porcelain about the thickness of a contact lens, each one precisely crafted to fit over the surface a tooth. A minute amount of enamel is removed from the front surface of the tooth, and an etching solution is applied. Then the veneer is held in place with strong adhesive.

With good care, veneers last at least ten years – much longer in some cases.

Smile Transformation With Veneers

A single tooth may be covered with a veneer, or several teeth that show readily in the top or bottom arch. Dental veneers are used to conceal:

  • Deep stains that don’t respond to whitening.
  • Old dental work that still does the job but looks dark or unnatural.
  • Flaws in enamel – chips, cracks, bumps, or pits.
  • Teeth that have an unusual shape or are worn down.
  • Teeth that look too short.
  • Poor cosmetic alignment, including gaps, overlaps, twisted, and crooked teeth.

You’ve probably seen a person with an attractive smile, and barely noticed it. You’ve probably also seen a smile that stops you in your tracks with its symmetry and utter perfection. The difference is probably porcelain veneers.
